Cayenne (Capsicum), also known as chilli, peperoni or pfefferoni, belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The substance responsible for the heat is called capsaicin. Capsaicin and other heat-producing substances derived from chillies are known as capsaicinoids. Capsaicinoids have revitalising effects on metabolism, the cardiovascular system and digestion. Furthermore, liquid preparations made from cayenne pepper can also be used as a gargle for sore throats and hoarseness.
