Krill oil is extracted from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba – tiny crustaceans that live in huge swarms), which feed on phytoplankton. Its supply is virtually unlimited, and the current annual catch quota amounts to less than one per mille of the stock. Krill oil must be produced with great care and at considerable expense. During extraction, the oil must not be exposed to excessively high temperatures (maximum 20 degrees) so that the three components – ‘phospholipids, astaxanthin and omega-3’ – are not destroyed and remain stable. Phospholipids and astaxanthin are found exclusively in krill oil (not in pure omega-3, omega-6 or omega-9).
EncorMed® Krill-plex plus is obtained through cold extraction. This method of extracting krill oil ensures significantly higher bioactivity, meaning the ingredients are characterised by their purity, high quality and efficacy. As krill oil is composed of phospholipids, it is very easily digested and does not cause a ‘fishy’ aftertaste.
