Saffron
Saffron is a type of crocus and belongs to the iris family (Iridaceae). The bulbous plant produces flowers, each with a three-part, yellow-coloured pistil, also known as a pistil, stigma or stigma, which is world-famous as a spice. Around 150,000-200,000 flowers or 700,000 pistils are needed to produce one kilogramme of this fine spice. Saffron is mainly grown in Iran and Afghanistan, but also in Europe in the Mediterranean region. The plant flowers once a year in autumn and can then be harvested within two weeks. As well as being used as a spice in food, saffron was also used as a colouring agent for clothing. Carotenoids, especially crocin and carotene, are responsible for the strong colour. The intense flavour is created by essential oils. The monoterpene aldehyde safranal plays a prominent role in this. Saffron also contains numerous flavonoids, i.e. secondary plant substances. Saffron was already used in ancient times. Hippocrates also speaks of the positive effects of saffron. In China and in Indian Ayurveda, saffron has been known for 2000 years. Modern science is now researching the effects of saffron more and more intensively.
Rhodiola
The five to 35 cm tall Rhodiola rosea L. belongs to the Crassulaceae family. The Swedish botanist Carl von Linné gave it the name Rhodiola rosea because of its rose-like odour. Rhodiola - also known as rose root - has been recommended for thousands of years in Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and Asia for stress and overload situations. In Scandinavia, the Baltic states and Russia in particular, rhodiola rosea has long been used in nutritional science.
