Turmeric root: more than just a spice?

The turmeric root (Curcuma longa), also known as yellow ginger, turmeric or turmeric root, from the ginger family, is native to India and South East Asia. Many people will be familiar with turmeric from its use in the production of the spice curry and as a natural colouring agent. However, turmeric extract has also been used in Ayurveda in Indonesia and India for several millennia. The most important ingredient of turmeric is curcumin and other curcuminoids and tetrahydrocurcuminoids, which belong to the secondary plant substances of phenols.

Problem: Bioavailability of curcumin

However, the benefits of curcumin have not yet been fully utilised, as humans can only absorb a small amount of natural curcumin. In other words, its bioavailability via the intestine is very low. This is due to the fact that it is fat-soluble and can therefore only be poorly absorbed in the aqueous environment of the intestine: As a result, 90% of it is excreted again. This becomes particularly clear if you look at the intestine of a person who has previously consumed curcumin. It is coloured yellow - a sign that the curcumin does not enter the metabolism, or only to a small extent. To improve its bioavailability, it has so far been combined primarily with piperine. Although the blood concentration increased as a result, in studies it only lasted for an hour and then quickly fell to the original level. A sustained absorption of curcumin is therefore difficult to achieve with piperine, which irritates the mucous membranes.

The bioavailability of the curcumin in Dr Wolz curcumin capsules is over 40 times higher than that of pure curcumin powder or conventional preparations! How is this possible? The fat-soluble (lipophilic) curcumin molecules are embedded in a ring of glucose molecules (a type of sugar - the so-called cyclodextrins) in such a way that there is a hydrophilic (water-loving) outer surface and a lipophilic, i.e. fat-friendly, cavity on the inside. The curcumin molecule remains in this cavity until it reaches the intestine. There it is transported individually by the cyclodextrin molecules to the intestinal wall, where it can be absorbed, while the cyclodextrin is broken down and excreted.

Scientifically proven - curcumin extract 45

The higher bioavailability of the secondary plant substance curcumin has also been scientifically proven in studies. The test subjects were given normal curcumin as well as three different preparations of which the manufacturers claim that the bioavailability is particularly high - including Curcumin Extract 45 from Dr Wolz. The result: curcumin extract 45 was absorbed more than 40 times more efficiently than the pure curcumin powder! This means that Curcumin Extract 45 makes the therapeutic potential of curcumin available to the organism to a much greater extent than previously available curcumin products.
