The turmeric root: more than just a spice?

The turmeric root (Curcuma longa), also known as yellow ginger, yellow root or turmeric, belongs to the ginger family and is native to India and South-East Asia. Many people are no doubt familiar with turmeric from its use in making the spice curry and as a natural colouring agent. But beyond that, turmeric extract has been used in Ayurveda in Indonesia and India for several millennia. The most important constituent of turmeric is curcumin, along with other curcuminoids and tetrahydrocurcuminoids, which belong to the group of phenolic secondary plant compounds.

Problem: Bioavailability of curcumin

However, the benefits of curcumin have not yet been fully realised, as the human body can only absorb very small amounts of natural curcumin. Or to put it another way: its bioavailability via the gut is very low. This is because it is fat-soluble and is therefore poorly absorbed in the aqueous environment of the gut: as a result, 90 per cent of it is excreted. This becomes particularly clear when one looks at the gut of a person who has previously consumed curcumin. It is stained yellow – a sign that the curcumin does not enter the bloodstream, or only to a very limited extent. To improve bioavailability, it has so far mainly been combined with piperine. Although this led to an increase in blood concentration, in studies this effect lasted only one hour before dropping rapidly back to the original level. Sustained absorption of curcumin is therefore difficult to achieve with piperine, which irritates the mucous membranes.

The bioavailability of the curcumin in Dr Wolz’s curcumin capsules is over 40 times higher than that of pure curcumin powder or conventional supplements! How is this possible? The fat-soluble (lipophilic) curcumin molecules are embedded within a ring of glucose molecules (a type of sugar – known as cyclodextrins), in such a way that a hydrophilic (water-loving) outer surface and a lipophilic, i.e. fat-loving, cavity inside. The curcumin molecule remains within this cavity until it reaches the gut. There, it is transported individually by the cyclodextrin molecules to the gut wall, where it can be absorbed, whilst the cyclodextrin is broken down and excreted.

Scientifically proven – Curcumin Extract 45

The higher bioavailability of the phytochemical curcumin has also been scientifically demonstrated in studies. In these studies, participants were given either standard curcumin or three different preparations which the manufacturers claim have particularly high bioavailability – including Curcumin Extract 45 by Dr Wolz. The result: Curcumin Extract 45 was absorbed over 40 times more efficiently than pure curcumin powder! It follows that Curcumin Extract 45 makes the therapeutic potential of curcumin available to the body to a much greater extent than previously available curcumin products.
