Orthosiphon, bog myrtle, horsetail and dandelion increase urine output, whilst peppermint ensures a pleasant taste.
Dandelion (Folium Taraxaci, Radix Taraxaci, Flos Taraxaci and Herba Taraxaci cum radice)
- The dandelion is an extremely adaptable plant; it grows in many types of soil. From March to April, its bright yellow flower heads can be seen in meadows and fields. The young, fresh leaves can also be used in salads or soups.
- Effect: Dandelion stimulates the kidneys and gallbladder to increase their activity. It is therefore used for disorders of bile flow and dyspeptic complaints as a naturally mild choleretic, diuretic and adjuvant for digestive disorders, particularly in cases of poor fat digestion.
Horsetail ,or field horsetail, or horsetail herb ( Herba Equiseti)
- In early spring, field horsetail (Zinnkraut) sends brown spore shoots to the surface from a rhizome that lies horizontally and branched in the soil. A few weeks later, the sterile shoots develop; these are used medicinally and are rich in silicic acid.
- Effect: Field horsetail has a strong diuretic effect, without, however, affecting or altering the electrolyte balance. It is ideally suited for flushing out the urinary tract in cases of bacterial and inflammatory conditions of the urinary tract and for treating kidney stones.
Peppermint ( Folium Menthae piperita)
- Peppermint is a naturally occurring hybrid of two mint species (M. spicata and M. aquatica). It is sterile, meaning it cannot reproduce naturally. It was first discovered in England in 1696 in a field of spearmint and has been cultivated from seedlings ever since. It grows to a height of up to 90 cm and contains essential oil. The leaves give off a characteristic scent when crushed.
- Effects: The main active ingredient in peppermint is essential oil, particularly menthol.Peppermint leaves are used to treat colds and headaches; they also relieve cramp-like symptoms in the gallbladder area and the gastrointestinal tract.
