Dr Kottas’ Marshmallow and Elderflower Herbal Tea is a tried-and-tested herbal blend. Formerly known as ‘basic tea’, this herbal infusion gently supports your conscious acid-base balance in everyday life.
For detoxing, during fasting regimes, on diets and when losing weight. The blend contains marshmallow, which, together with liquorice root, protects the delicate stomach lining. Verbena is said to bring more joy into life. Refreshing lemongrass and elderflower, with their characteristic delicate aroma, round off the tea’s flavour.
Lemongrass ( Folium Citronellae)
- Lemongrass is a cultivated plant; the area of origin of this grass-like or reed-like perennial is thought to be East Asia. It is grown in large parts of tropical Asia and South America for medicinal and culinary purposes. The plant, which grows in clumps, reaches a height of up to one metre and can be harvested three to four times a year. The name derives from the lemon-like scent the grass releases when crushed. The citral in the essential oil is responsible for the scent and the fruity, tangy flavour.
- Effects: The fresh scent has a refreshing and invigorating effect in cases of tiredness, exhaustion and general weakness. Lemongrass is often used as a flavouring agent.
Elder ( Flos Sambuci)
- The elderberry bush usually grows to a height of 3–4 metres, but can reach up to 10 metres. Its distinguishing features are its warty, unpleasant-smelling bark and its large inflorescences with yellowish-white flowers, which develop into glossy black to black-violet berries in autumn. The main active constituents of the flowers are essential oils, diaphoretic glycosides and flavonoids.
- Effects: Elderflowers have a strong diaphoretic and antipyretic effect and help to mobilise the body’s own defences.
Marshmallow ( Radix Althaeae, Folium Althaeae)
- This perennial, soft-haired plant, which grows up to 1.5 m tall, is widespread throughout Europe and Western Asia. The flowers are pale pink to white. The leaves, harvested shortly before flowering, and the roots are used medicinally.
- Effect: To soothe irritation caused by inflammation of the mucous membranes in the mouth and throat, as well as in the gastrointestinal tract, and to alleviate the urge to cough associated with bronchial catarrh.
Liquorice ( Radix Liquiritiae)
- Liquorice is a woody, perennial herb that grows up to 2 m tall. It has an extensive root system with a taproot. The bluish to pale violet papilionaceous flowers are arranged in spike-like, upright inflorescences. For medicinal purposes, the lateral roots, which are harvested and dried from late autumn to spring, are used.
- Effects: Glycyrrhizin, which is found in liquorice root, has cough-suppressant, anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties. Furthermore, it inhibits the growth of bacteria, fungi and viruses; therefore, liquorice root can also be used to treat coughs and inflammation in the mouth and throat.
