Every owner of a domestic cat will have noticed that their pet spends a quarter of its waking hours grooming. The cat brushes and cleans its fur with its rough tongue, so that it is inevitable that it will swallow a large amount of hair or even whole tufts of hair.
The ingested hair must now pass through the gastrointestinal tract. Normally, they are then excreted undigested in the faeces, which in the best case is without any visible problems for a healthy cat. The development of hairballs
- The ingested hair can form solid lumps in the stomach together with digested food residues and digestive secretions, the so-called hairballs (trichobezoars).
- In 57% of shorthair cats and 76% of long-haired cats, the vomiting of a hairball can be observed at least once a year. These trichobezoars can be several centimetres in diameter and cause significant problems in the digestive tract.
Consequences of hairballs
No cat owner likes to see their beloved pet regurgitate hair or even vomit whole hairballs. Vomiting also leads to discomfort and loss of important electrolytes in cats. This behaviour is triggered by irritation of the stomach due to an excessive amount of ingested hair. This can also lead to discomfort in the intestinal area.

The most important measure to reduce the risk of hairballs forming is diet. Feeding special food components can reduce the formation of hairballs and facilitate the elimination of ingested hair:
- Malt, cellulose and psyllium husks are high-quality suppliers of soluble and insoluble fibres. As dietary fibres, they stimulate intestinal peristalsis and thus promote the natural elimination of ingested hair.
- Psyllium husks also provide mucilage, which helps to reduce the formation of hairballs.
- Salmon oil coats the hair, preventing it from clumping together and promoting its passage through the gastrointestinal tract. The essential fatty acids can also have a positive effect on intestinal irritation.
- Inulin acts as a prebiotic and supports a healthy intestinal environment.
