Causes of ‘dry eyes’ (Sicca syndrome)

We suffer from dry eyes, also known as ‘Sicca syndrome’, when insufficient tears are produced or when the composition of the outer lipid layer on the surface of the eye is disrupted. If the tear film no longer completely covers the surface of the eye, dry patches develop, leading to a disturbing sensation in the eyes: they are sensitive, irritated and feel uncomfortably dry. A disturbance can also cause the eyes to water frequently.

The surface of our eyes is moistened and protected by a tear film. Normal tear film formation and normal tear flow are therefore essential for eye function and health!

The outermost layer of the tear film is lipid-rich and ensures that the tear fluid does not evaporate, thus keeping the eyes well moistened. Only an intact tear film can prevent the surface of the eye from drying out.

In fact, there are many factors that can adversely affect the tear film:

These include ageing, hormonal fluctuations such as those experienced during the menopause, UV exposure, air conditioning, dry heated air, medical conditions such as rheumatism or diabetes, contact lenses and working at a computer screen. In particular, prolonged, intensive screen use nowadays means that we blink significantly less often, resulting in poorer lubrication of the eye’s surface. This can lead to a disrupted tear film and increased evaporation of the tear fluid. All these factors can result in watery, irritated or itchy eyes.

Symptoms of dry eyes

Dry eye is very common: 15–17 per cent ¹ of the German population is affected. The symptoms of Sicca syndrome range from:

• Dryness
• Redness
• Itching
• Burning
• A sensation of a foreign body in the eye (particularly among contact lens wearers)
• Watery eyes, resulting in blurred vision, swollen and/or sticky eyelids
• Tiredness
• Sensitivity to light
• Feeling of pressure

Eye drops and sprays containing hyaluronic acid are frequently used to relieve the unpleasant symptoms of dry eyes. Similar to natural tears, they moisturise the eye and are also well tolerated. If there is no improvement in symptoms over the long term, an ophthalmologist should be consulted to investigate the causes.

Directions for use

• Shake well before use.
• When using for the first time, press the nozzle down three to four times.
• Hold the bottle securely, place your finger on the spray head, taking care not to cover the nozzle.
• Hold the bottle 10 cm away from the eye.
• Look straight ahead and hold the spray bottle against the outer corner of the eye.
• Apply firm pressure to the spray head to ensure complete atomisation.
• Two sprays per application are recommended, even several times a day.
• Can be used with contact lenses.
• Notes: Doppelherz system EYE SPRAY HYALURON 0.3% is a sterile solution. Free from chlorhexidine, thimerosal, benzalkonium chloride and phenoxyethanol.
