Dechra Floracid Novo Complex Drink Powder is a dietary supplement for rearing calves (suckling calves). It is designed to stabilise water and electrolyte balance and to support physiological digestion. Microencapsulated, probiotic lactic acid bacteria to stabilise the gut flora.
Various infections in calves that result in high mortality rates can be traced back to a disruption of physiological gastrointestinal function. Feeding problems are often the underlying triggers. In this context, changes to the natural bacterial flora (dysbiosis) play a significant role. Preserving and supporting this natural bacterial flora is therefore the primary objective. ‘Cernelle 68’ – the premium-quality microencapsulated probiotic
Floracid® Novo contains high-dose, specially microencapsulated, viable and
replicating lactic acid bacteria of the Enterococcus faecium ‘Cernelle 68’ strain. The microcapsule reliably protects the probiotic from attacks by stomach acid
and the harmful effects of bile salts. Non-encapsulated probiotics usually do not survive passage through the stomach.
It is only in the distal small intestine, the ileum and the colon that the bacteria released from the microcapsule multiply. This happens particularly quickly; this is because ‘Cernelle 68’ has an extremely
short lag phase, meaning that the bacteria adapt to the intestinal environment within a very short time and immediately enter the exponential log phase (rapid multiplication). Support for the physiological gut flora is therefore immediate. Foreign bacteria can thus be fended off, and diarrhoea-causing bacteria reduced through bacterial competition. The body is supported in producing its own antibodies and strengthening its defences. In the case of mild infections, foreign bacteria are even completely eliminated.
- Electrolytes and minerals: Sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and chlorides replenish the amounts lost through faeces and stabilise the electrolyte balance.
- Glucose (grape sugar): Glucose is a direct and rapidly utilisable source of energy for all the body’s cells, and in particular for the intestinal cells. It serves as an energy source for the entire organism and aids the rapid regeneration of the intestinal mucosa.
- Whey powder with lactose (milk sugar): Firstly, whey powder makes the drink taste much better. This is very important, because without acceptance, there is no effect! Secondly, milk digestion is maintained, as the lactose-splitting enzymes must continue to be produced in the small intestine. This facilitates a return to the usual milk-based diet.
- Lactose (milk sugar): The added milk sugar serves as a source of energy that is available over the longer term. Blood sugar levels are supported immediately by glucose and over a longer period by lactose. Furthermore, lactose is converted into lactic acid by gut bacteria (lowering the pH).
- Glycine: Glycine (an amino acid), which makes up the majority of the flavouring, has a high sweetening power; together with glucose, glycine serves to further increase palatability. Glycine is also believed to play a role in rehydration by optimising the regulation of water reabsorption from the gut into the body (osmoregulation).
- Banana flakes and locust bean gum: Both of these feed materials are rich in prebiotic substances that serve as a food source for the beneficial colonic flora (prebiotics).
- Plant-based pectins and high-fibre citrus pomace: Mucilaginous pectins form a protective layer over the damaged intestinal wall and accelerate the thickening of the intestinal contents. High-fibre citrus pomace can bind bacteria and toxins. This allows them to be excreted harmlessly, thereby producing an intestinal cleansing effect.

Directions for use
- In mild cases and following diarrhoea, this dietary supplement can be administered 1–2 times a day as an in-between drink for up to seven days, in a quantity of 2 litres each time.
- You can use this dietary supplement by dissolving two level measuring spoons (approx. 80 g in total) in ½ litre of lukewarm water until no lumps remain, then topping up with body-temperature water (approx. 40 °C) to make up 2 litres. Feed freshly prepared and at body temperature. The simultaneous feeding of milk should be avoided in animals with a ruminant digestive system.
- Notes: It is recommended that you seek advice from a vet before use or if extending the feeding period.
