  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Venous leg ulcers
  • Arterial leg ulcers
  • Mixed leg ulcers

  • Surgical wounds
  • Traumatic wounds
  • Malignant wounds

Dosage form

Wound dressing, sterile

Usage

Contact and duration of use

  • Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings can be worn for up to 7 days. If clinically indicated, the dressing must be changed sooner.
  • For second-degree burns, the dressing may remain on the wound for up to 14 days.
  • The need for continued use of Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings should be reassessed after 14 days and, if necessary, an alternative wound care option should be considered.

Instructions for use:

  • Clean the wound with a suitable wound cleanser before applying the dressing.
  • The Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressing should overlap the skin around the wound by at least 1 cm.
  • When using Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings in deep wounds, fill the wound to only 80 per cent, as Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings expand on contact with wound exudate and fill the wound cavity.
  • A secondary dressing is required to hold Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings in place on the wound, for example: A moisture-retaining cover dressing (e.g. DuoDERM™ Extra Thin) for wounds with mild to moderate exudate; A secondary dressing such as Aquacel™ Foam, Aquacel™ Foam Pro or ConvaMax™ for moderately to heavily exuding wounds; For dry wounds, see the section ‘ON DRY WOUNDS’ below.
  • Please refer to the package leaflet for the relevant dressing for full instructions for use.
  • All wounds should be examined regularly.
  • Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings should be changed when clinically indicated (e.g. leakage, heavy bleeding, increasing pain) or after a maximum of seven days.

For partial-thickness burns (second-degree):

  • Before applying the dressing, clean the wound area with a suitable wound cleanser.
  • The Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressing should overlap the skin around the burn wound or any other adjacent Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings by at least 5 cm.
  • Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings should be covered with a sterile absorbent pad and secured with an adhesive plaster or a fixation bandage.
  • Remove the covering dressing regularly and check the Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings remaining on the burn wound.
  • For this indication, the adhesion of the Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings to the wound bed is a desirable property.
  • As re-epithelialisation of the burn wound progresses, the Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings detach or can be easily removed.
  • For second-degree burns, Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings may remain on the wound for up to 14 days or as clinically indicated.
  • If the burn is infected, it may be necessary to examine the wound regularly.

On dry wounds:

  • Moisten Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings with sterile saline solution before applying them to the wound.
  • The gelling properties of Aquacel™ Ag+ EXTRA™ dressings help to maintain a moist wound environment and reduce the risk of maceration.
  • Cover the dressing with a moisture-retaining secondary dressing (e.g. DuoDERM™ Extra Thin) to prevent the dressing from drying out and subsequently sticking to the wound.
  • If the dressing is dry when being removed, it must be moistened with sterile saline solution before removal to reduce the risk of trauma.
