Calcium and vitamin D
- Calcium and vitamin D help to reduce the loss of bone minerals in postmenopausal women. Low bone mineral density is a risk factor for bone fractures caused by osteoporosis. The positive effect starts with an intake of 1,200 mg calcium and 20 μg vitamin D3 from all sources (including food), especially for women over 50. Calcium is the most important mineral in the human body in terms of quantity at approx. 1 kg.
- Calcium is an essential building block of tooth and bone tissue and gives bones their strength. A sufficient supply of calcium is therefore the basis for healthy bones.
- Among other things, vitamin D is responsible for calcium absorption from the intestine and for bone mineralisation. Only 10 to 20 % of the daily requirement of vitamin D can be met through diet; the rest, approx. 80 to 90 %, is produced by the body itself through the effects of sunlight (specifically UVB radiation) on the skin. In the absence of sun exposure, e.g. in the winter months, sufficient vitamin D production is not guaranteed and our body has to fall back on reserves. In addition, the ability to produce vitamin D through the skin itself decreases with advancing age.
- Calcium and vitamin D in combination. Our body needs vitamin D to store calcium in the bones. In order to prevent up to 80 % of the calcium absorbed from being excreted unused, it is important to take vitamin D at the same time to ensure calcium absorption. Without a corresponding additional dose of vitamin D, calcium alone is not very effective in the long term.
