Aspartic acid is one of the non-essential, proteinogenic amino acids. Together with glutamic acid, aspartic acid is one of the most important neurotransmitters in the brain and therefore influences mental and physical performance. This amino acid is also the precursor of coenzyme A, which is involved in the breakdown of fatty acids and in sugar and protein metabolism. Aspartic acid is also a component of the urea metabolism.
