Krill is the collective term for small, shrimp-like crustaceans that live in large swarms in the cold waters of the Antarctic and are an important food source for numerous marine animals. Krill oil is extracted from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and is characterised by its high content of the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Unlike conventional fish oil, the omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil are predominantly present in the form of phospholipids, which is why krill oil mixes well with water and the fatty acids can be effectively absorbed by the body.
