With its intense aroma, aniseed (Pimpinella anisum) – one of Europe’s oldest aromatic plants – evokes childhood memories, as it is used in numerous Christmas biscuits and confectionery. But aniseed does not merely enhance bread and baked goods; it also has various other benefits. It is no coincidence that this plant was named ‘Medicinal Plant of the Year 2024’ by the Association for the Promotion of Natural Healing (NHV Theophrastus). The compounds found in aniseed stimulate the glands of the gastrointestinal tract, thereby having a soothing effect on these organs and preventing the unpleasant build-up of excessive digestive gases. Some of the essential oils from this herb are excreted via the lungs. For this reason, and due to its mucus-thinning properties, aniseed also provides relief for the respiratory tract and thus helps to ward off the odd germ or two.
