Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulphur-containing fatty acid produced naturally by the body. In its natural (R) form, it plays an important role as a coenzyme in the mitochondria and is therefore essential for cellular energy metabolism. As a powerful antioxidant, alpha-lipoic acid can protect tissues from damage caused by free radicals and can even recycle antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 or glutathione once they have been used up. The fatty acid can also chelate metals such as mercury, lead, aluminium or cadmium and is therefore also used to help eliminate heavy metals from the body. As alpha-lipoic acid is both water- and fat-soluble, it can cross the blood-brain barrier and is therefore able to rid the brain of harmful metals as well. As a rule, the human body produces sufficient quantities of alpha-lipoic acid to meet its daily requirements. It is now believed, however, that under certain physiological conditions, the body does not produce sufficient alpha-lipoic acid.
