Bios Acetyl-L-Carnitine 250 mg capsules are a dietary supplement containing acetyl-L-carnitine. Acetyl-L-carnitine, the acetylated form of carnitine, is produced naturally in the body and is metabolised in the blood into carnitine.
Carnitine is a key metabolite in the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria – the powerhouses of the cells – where they are utilised via β-oxidation to produce energy. It is only with the help of the transport molecule carnitine that the fatty acids can pass through the mitochondrial membrane. Carnitine therefore plays an essential role in fatty acid metabolism. Unlike carnitine, acetyl-L-carnitine is able to cross the blood-brain barrier – a natural barrier between the bloodstream and the central nervous system. This makes acetyl-L-carnitine the most effective compound for the brain. As carnitine is found mainly in animal products, supplementation is particularly recommended for vegetarians and vegans.
