5-MTHF 800 µg Bios capsules contain folic acid in its natural, bioactive form as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF). This is the patented premium substance Quatrefolic®. In this form, folate can be absorbed particularly efficiently by the body and utilised directly because, unlike folic acid, it does not first have to be converted into the active form through several enzymatic steps. In some people, this conversion is also severely restricted due to a genetic disposition, so that folic acid can only be insufficiently activated. L-5-MTHF is already present in methylated form and is therefore immediately available to the body for methylation processes. Among other things, it supports homocysteine degradation, DNA synthesis and cell division. In addition, 5-MTHF can cross the blood-brain barrier more efficiently than folic acid. Folate contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism and normal amino acid synthesis and plays a role in the process of cell division. It also supports normal haematopoiesis and normal functioning of the immune system and reduces tiredness and fatigue.

Folate also promotes normal psychological function. Especially during pregnancy, the intake of folate is essential. The additional intake of folic acid increases the maternal folate status. A low maternal folate status is a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus. Folate also plays a central role in the growth of maternal tissue during pregnancy.
