Swedish bitters have had a permanent place in medicine chests since the 17th century. Formerly used for all ailments, today it is primarily taken after meals to promote well-being. Maria Treben in particular made Swedish bitters one of the best-known and most popular household remedies with her publication "Health from God's Pharmacy".

Our Swedish bitters contain only alcohol, water and alcoholic herbal extracts.

Effect of Arlberg Swedish bitters

  • Bitters are valuable aids to digestion. If bitter food is ingested, the bitter receptors signal this, which leads to increased production of stomach acid. In the liver and pancreas, the production and release of digestive enzymes is stimulated and digestion in the small intestine is accelerated.
  • In recent decades, however, the food industry has bred out more and more naturally occurring bitter substances from salads, vegetables and bitter fruit varieties. This lack of bitter substances can lead to an insufficient production of stomach acid and digestive enzymes. This in turn can lead to flatulence, a feeling of fullness and stomach pressure.
  • The plant parts selected in Swedish bitters contain bitter substances that have a digestive effect and stimulate digestion, thus aiding digestion in the event of bloating and after sumptuous meals.

It's all about the right ingredients

  • Orange peel is often part of tea blends, but it also contains bitter-tasting flavonoids that stimulate the release of various digestive juices via the sense of taste. These not only relieve flatulence and bloating, but also have an appetite-enhancing effect. They are therefore often part of tinctures that aid digestion and are also an important ingredient in our Swedish bitters.
  • Centaury has many names - depending on the region, it is also known as feverfew, God's grace herb and bitter herb and it is easy to recognise parallels to the respective application. The extract is mainly used to stimulate the digestive juices from the liver, gall bladder and stomach.
  • In medieval monastery gardens, angelica was cultivated primarily to combat the plague. Its second name "angelica" probably refers to the heavenly powers attributed to it. At 2 metres tall, the plant contains coumarins, caffeic acid derivatives and essential oils as its most important ingredients. The dried roots of angelica are used in our Swedish bitters, which contribute to the bitter flavour of the Swedish bitters.
  • Cinnamon is a spice that was already mentioned in the Old Testament - it has been used in Europe since around 500 BC. It not only tastes great on Christmas biscuits, it also aids digestion in cases of flatulence and loss of appetite. Wormwood, like most medicinal plants, has been used since ancient times. At that time, it was even considered sacred and was dedicated to the goddess Artemisia, the patron saint of women.
  • Wormwood has been used in many different ways - as a love potion, instead of incense or as a vermifuge by the ancient Egyptians. Pastor Kneipp also recommended it and for a long time, absinthe distilled from wormwood was a popular drink which - when consumed in excess - led to intoxication-like drunkenness. In our Swedish bitters, however, it is said to intensify the bitter flavour and thus has a stimulating effect on all digestive juices and is beneficial for digestion.
