Properties:
Coenzyme Q10 is also known as ubiquinone because it is found everywhere (ubiquitous) in plant and animal organisms. It is partly absorbed through the diet, but is also produced by the body itself. Coenzyme Q10 plays a key role in the mitochondria – the powerhouses of our body’s cells – in the production of cellular energy.
The organs with the highest energy requirements – such as the heart, lungs and liver – therefore also have the highest concentrations of Q10.
Ubiquinone concentrations in tissues decline over the course of a lifetime. Compared with young people, coenzyme Q10 levels in older people are up to 50 per cent lower.
