Function of the stomach

• Food is stored in the stomach, broken down, mixed with gastric juice and partially digested. The stomach produces around 3–4 litres of gastric juice per day, which contains, amongst other things, gastric acid and enzymes for the digestion of proteins and fats. Stomach acid lowers the pH of the stomach, thereby helping to denature dietary proteins and acting as a bactericide. The fats contained in food are emulsified whilst still in the stomach.
• How long food remains in the stomach depends on its composition – the higher the protein and fat content of the meal, the longer it stays in the stomach. Solid food remains in the stomach until the food particles are less than 1 mm in diameter. Only then is the chyme passed on to the small intestine.
• Meals that are particularly high in fat, eating too much, or unfamiliar food whilst travelling can lead to stomach discomfort. Essential oils derived from herbs traditionally used to aid digestion can help promote a sense of well-being.

• Up to 20 drops, taken neat, in water or tea, or on a piece of bread, 2–3 times a day.
• Notes: Not suitable for pregnant women. Shake well before use! Not suitable for children under 12 years of age. Store in a cool place after opening.
