Black cumin is at the forefront of the most effective things nature has to offer. It is an important part of oriental cuisine. But that alone does not explain the continuing interest in the tiny black seeds over several millennia. The real black cumin seed (Nigella sativa), a buttercup plant, has a flavour reminiscent of pepper, sesame and cumin. It only shares its name with caraway and cumin, it is not related to them.

Black cumin originally comes from West Asia, Turkey and Iraq, but is also native to the Mediterranean region. Its use goes back to ancient Babylonian times, to the Egypt of the pharaohs, to the Persia of the great scholar Avicenna, to the Promised Land of biblical times, to the ancient Greece of Hippocrates or Dioscorides and to the ancient Rome of Pliny. Every single one of them and even the Prophet Mohammed praised black cumin. Emperor Charlemagne authorised its cultivation in Europe. While it fell into oblivion in Europe in the 16th century, the Orient not only continued to use it, but has almost worshipped it to this day.

After flowering in mid-August, the plant forms poppy-like capsules. Inside are the black, triangular seeds. The black cumin oil pressed from the seeds is used internally and externally, as are the whole or crushed seeds. Capsules are also filled with it and used as a dietary supplement.
