Red clover has long been cultivated here as a crop and forage. What is far less well known is that red clover is also traditionally used as a medicinal plant – specifically, its flowers, leaves and stems. This is because red clover contains ‘isoflavones’, which are secondary plant compounds also known as ‘phytoestrogens’ because they are similar to the female hormone oestrogen.
