- A dry cough or irritative cough is usually without phlegm and can have various triggers. At the start or end of a cold, irritation of the mucous membranes in the upper respiratory tract may occur .Dry air, foreign particles such as dust, allergens, or viruses and bacteria canalso irritate the mucous membranes.
- Productive cough: The body’s own mucus film, which keeps the bronchi moist and protects them from drying out, consists of several components – for example, dead cells, various proteins and white blood cells. In the event of respiratory tract conditions, both the composition and the colour and consistency of the mucus can change. When mucus production increases, the body attempts to remove the excess mucus from the branched network of the bronchi by coughing. The mucus is coughed upinto the mouth , where it can either be swallowed or spat out.

- Children aged 6–11 years: 15 ml up to 4 times a day
- Children aged 4–5 years: 7.5 ml up to 4 times a day
- Children aged 2–3 years: 5 ml up to 4 times a day
- Children aged 1 year and over: 5 ml up to 3 times a day
