Rosemary was already highly valued in the Mediterranean region in ancient times. It was dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite and symbolised love and beauty. Sprigs of rosemary were placed in the cradle of small children to protect them, and a sprig of rosemary is still often found in bridal bouquets today. In the first centuries after Christ, rosemary was introduced to Central Europe by monks and was considered an important plant in the monasteries for all kinds of ailments
