- Bifidobacterium bifidum and Bifidobacterium lactis are naturally occurring bacteria in the intestine that produce acetic acid and lactic acid.
- Bifidobacterium infantis and Bifidobacterium longum are among the natural bacteria of the large intestine. Together with the other bifidobacteria, they are among the first microorganisms to colonise an infant's digestive tract after birth. Lactic acid bacteria convert carbohydrates into lactic acid.
- Bifidobacterium breve is able to produce vitamins in the intestine. It enters the intestines of newborn babies both via the vaginal tract and via breast milk.
- The strain Lactobacillus casei, like Lactobacillus paracasei, occurs naturally in the intestinal flora. It can produce special enzymes, such as lactocepin, which in turn can break down casein and gluten.
- Lactobacillus plantarum was originally discovered in human saliva and is a natural inhabitant of the digestive tract, where Lactobacillus salivarius is also found. It can produce lactic acid bacteria bacteriocins.
- Lactococcus lactis, like Lactobacillus acidophilus, is normally found in the digestive tract and the vagina. However, it is the bacterium most frequently found in the intestines of newborn babies.
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus occurs naturally in both the digestive and urogenital tracts. In contrast to other lactic acid bacteria, however, it is not a permanent inhabitant, but only occurs temporarily.
