Sage, a perennial shrub up to 1 metre tall, is also known as royal sage, noble sage or garden sage. Sage belongs to the labiate family (Lamiaceae). Its stalked leaves have an elongated, lancet-like shape, appear somewhat wrinkled and are covered in grey felt-like hairs. They feel very soft to the touch. Sage is well known for its sweat-regulating properties. Its fresh, herbaceous scent has both a cleansing and energising effect. Externally, sage has beneficial effects for the care and soothing of irritated skin, as well as refining and tightening enlarged pores. Its essential oils have a regulating effect on sebum production, so that oily areas of the skin are naturally mattified.
