DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a natural substance and a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the sex steroids androgen and oestrogen. It is a substance produced by the body, mainly in the inner layer of the adrenal cortex. However, DHEA production decreases dramatically with age. By way of comparison, a 60-year-old has only one-fifth the DHEA concentration of a young adult. Smoking, stress and being overweight further deplete DHEA levels. As circulating DHEA levels are linked to the ageing process, this prohormone has a reputation as a ‘fountain of youth’ capable of counteracting some of the effects of ageing. Furthermore, DHEA strengthens the immune system, supports stress resistance and promotes a positive mood.
