What is krill oil?
Krill oil is extracted from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) – tiny crustaceans that live in the clear, cold waters of the Southern Ocean. Unlike conventional fish oil, the omega-3 fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) in krill oil are predominantly present in phospholipid form. EPA is a pentapolyunsaturated fatty acid and DHA is even hexapolyunsaturated. The high number of double bonds contributes to its unique physical and biological properties.
In addition to the omega-3 fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), krill oil also contains the carotenoid astaxanthin, which gives it its natural reddish colour.
Raab Krill Oil Capsules contain high-quality, pure krill oil sourced from sustainable fisheries.
Did you know?
- EPA and DHA are polyunsaturated fatty acids, with EPA being 5-fold and DHA 6-fold unsaturated. This structure gives them special physical and biological properties.
- Astaxanthin is a carotenoid that occurs naturally in krill oil and gives it its reddish colour. Astaxanthin is classified as a phytochemical. It is produced by algae, which the krill consume as food.
- Omega-3 fatty acids are essential, as the body cannot produce them itself – they must be obtained from food.
EPA and DHA contribute to:
