- Contains the carotenoid astaxanthin, lactose- and gluten-free
What is krill oil?
Krill oil is extracted from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) - tiny crustaceans that live in the clear, cold waters of the southern polar seas. In contrast to conventional fish oil, the omega-3 fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) in krill oil are predominantly in phospholipid form. EPA is a 5-fold unsaturated fatty acid and DHA is even 6-fold unsaturated. The high number of double bonds contributes to the special physical and biological properties.
In addition to the omega-3 fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), krill oil also contains the carotenoid astaxanthin, which gives it its natural, reddish colour. Raab Krill Oil Capsules contain high-quality, pure krill oil from sustainable fishing.
Did you already know?
- EPA and DHA are polyunsaturated fatty acids, with EPA being 5-fold unsaturated and DHA 6-fold unsaturated. This structure gives them special physical and biological properties.
- Astaxanthin is a carotenoid that is naturally present in krill oil and gives it its reddish colour. Astaxanthin is a secondary plant substance. It is formed by algae, which krill ingest as food.
- Omega-3 fatty acids are essential as the body cannot produce them itself - they must be obtained from food.
