The rose is a deciduous shrub and is regarded as the ‘queen of flowers’; it has lent its name to the entire plant genus. The Damask rose originates from the Persian region and is said to have been introduced from there by the Crusaders. The typical form of Rosa damascena is slightly climbing-rose-like with gently drooping pink flowers. The species cultivated today as an oil rose in Turkey, Morocco, Bulgaria, India, Persia and Russia is called Rosa damascena trigintipetala.
