Cistus is a bushy shrub with rose-like flowers and thrives in the dry, lime-poor soils of the Mediterranean garrigue and maquis. Cistus is one of the famous flavourings of antiquity and was used as an incense and to prevent illness. In perfumery, it is used in (oriental) perfumes, soaps and also in food flavouring. In naturopathy, rockrose is used in the treatment of skin and lymph.
