Cardamom is a spice plant that thrives in the humid mountain forests of India and Sri Lanka at 750 and 1000 metres above sea level. Cardamom is a perennial plant up to 4 metres high with large lanceolate leaves and camphor-like fragrant fruits, which are harvested from October to December. It is one of the oldest spices in the world. In naturopathy, it is used to treat digestive and urinary tract problems and for oral hygiene. In the kitchen, the capsule fruits and seeds are used in curry spices, chai tea, Arabic mocha, Christmas biscuits and liqueurs.
