Pine bark is particularly rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC), which are regarded as natural antagonists of oxidative stress and free radicals.

OPC - the bodyguard of trees

In trees, oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC for short) are regarded as natural antagonists of oxidative stress. The bark of the pine tree is particularly rich in OPCs. These are condensed tannins or tannins that belong to the flavanols and, as secondary plant substances, help the trees to ward off predators. At the same time, they serve as natural weather and UV protection for the trees. The OPCs contained in pine bark therefore fulfil a kind of bodyguard function to protect the tree. This is why the concentration of OPCs in pine bark is particularly high: the proportion is usually between 85 and 90 per cent.
