Spirulina platensis is one of the oldest life forms on earth. It is a blue-green microalgae that is partly responsible for the production of oxygen in the atmosphere. Billions of years ago, life was able to develop on this earth in this way. The name "spirulina" is derived from "spiral", as the bacteria are normally spiral-shaped. (However, linear Arthospira have also been found.) Another common name for spirulina is blue-green algae. This refers to the blue-green colour of the bacteria
