Amino acids which the body cannot produce itself and which must be obtained from food are known as essential amino acids: L-leucine, L-isoleucine, L-methionine, L-threonine, L-valine, L-lysine, L-phenylalanine, L-tryptophan and L-histidine. They must be supplied to the body in optimal quantities and in a balanced composition.
