Intestine & immune system

The intestine is the body's largest area of contact with the outside world. It is therefore understandable that an important and large part of the body's immune system can be found in the gut. The intestinal mucosa fulfils an important barrier function. Together with the intestinal bacteria, its cells form a well-functioning protective layer.

In order to maintain this protective layer, intact mucous membranes are required. This can be supported with the vitamin biotin. As this is a water-soluble vitamin, the body cannot store it. It must therefore be taken daily. This can be done, for example, with the food supplement Pascoflorin®.

Intestinal barrier - useful and sensitive

What can affect a healthy intestinal mucosa?

  • Ongoing physical and psychological stress can weaken the immune system and lead to inflammation of the intestinal mucosa.
  • An unhealthy diet can damage the gut: too large portions, hasty eating, foods that are too high in fat, too much protein, eating too late or too little time between meals.
  • Physical exercise influences intestinal movement and therefore digestion - little exercise can have a negative effect.
  • Various medicines, especially antibiotics, can have a negative effect on intestinal health
What consequences can there be if the function of the intestinal barrier is impaired?

In addition to its defence function, the intestinal mucosa also plays a key role in digestion. If the intestinal mucosa cannot perform its tasks as usual, various gastrointestinal complaints such as flatulence, diarrhoea or constipation can occur. A damaged intestinal mucosa can also be characterised by allergies, food intolerances and recurring infections.
