Gut & Immune System
The gut is the body’s largest point of contact with the outside world. It is therefore understandable that a significant and substantial part of the body’s immune system is located in the gut. The intestinal mucosa plays a vital barrier role here. Its cells, together with the gut bacteria, form an effective protective layer.
To maintain this protective layer, intact mucous membranes are essential. These can be supported with the vitamin biotin. As this is a water-soluble vitamin, the body cannot store it. It must therefore be taken daily. This can be done, for example, with the dietary supplement Pascoflorin®.
The intestinal barrier – vital yet delicate
What can impair a healthy intestinal mucosa?
- Ongoing physical and psychological stress can both weaken the immune system and lead to inflammation of the intestinal mucosa.
- An unhealthy diet can damage the gut: excessively large portions, eating too quickly, foods that are too high in fat, too much protein, eating meals too late in the day, or leaving too little time between meals.
- Physical activity influences bowel movements and thus digestion – a lack of exercise can have a negative effect.
- Various medicines, particularly antibiotics, can have a negative effect on gut health
What are the potential consequences if the function of the intestinal barrier is impaired?
As well as its defensive function, the intestinal mucosa also plays a key role in digestion. If the intestinal mucosa is unable to perform its functions as usual, various gastrointestinal complaints such as bloating, diarrhoea or constipation may occur. Damage to the intestinal mucosa can also manifest as allergies, food intolerances and recurrent infections.
