The PRIMA® Urinary Tract Infection Home Test is a self-test for the detection of leucocytes, blood, nitrites and proteins in urine. Result after only 2 minutes.

The urinary tract

A urinary tract infection is the most common disease of the urinary tract, which is made up of the ureter, bladder, urethra and renal pelvis. Men, women and children can contract a urinary tract infection. Women in particular often suffer from this type of infection, as the short urethra favours the penetration of pathogens. However, men of advanced age are also affected if an enlarged prostate prevents urine from being passed. In healthy people, urine is sterile (contains no microorganisms). Regular and complete emptying of the bladder is one of the most important measures to ensure the sterility of urine. Normally, the infection starts in the urethra. It can then spread to the upper urinary tract and even reach the kidneys. The symptoms of an infection can vary: Burning, a strong and frequent urge to go to the toilet and, in more severe cases, pain in the lower back, fever and chills. The urine may also be cloudy or have a strong odour. The URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS TEST contains solid plastic strips on which several separate reagent fields are applied. The test is for the qualitative and semi-quantitative detection of the following analytes in urine: leucocytes, blood, nitrites and protein.

Test principle

  • Leukocytes: This test indicates the presence of granulocyte esterases. The esterases cleave a derivatised pyrazole amino acid ester, releasing hydroxylpyrazole. This pyrazole then reacts with a diazonium salt and forms a beige-pink to violet colour.
  • Blood: This test is based on a peroxidase-like activity of haemoglobin, which catalyses the reaction of diisopropylbenzenedihydroperoxide and 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine. The resulting colour ranges from orange to green to dark blue.
  • Nitrite: This test is based on the conversion of nitrate to nitrite by gram-negative bacteria in urine. In an acidic environment, nitrite in urine reacts with p-arsanilic acid and forms a diazonium compound. The diazonium compound in turn binds to 1N-(1-naphthyl)-ethylenediamine to produce a pink colour.
  • Protein: This reaction is based on the phenomenon known as the "protein error" of pH indicators, in which a strongly buffered indicator changes colour when proteins (anions) are present, as the indicator releases hydrogen ions to the protein. The colours range from yellow to yellow-green for negative results and from green to green-blue for positive results.
Technical data

URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS TEST consists of plastic strips to which different reactive areas are applied. The test is intended for the qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis of leucocytes, blood, nitrites and proteins in urine.

  • Leucocyte accuracy 97.6%
  • Blood accuracy 96.0%
  • Protein accuracy 88.0%
  • Nitrite accuracy 100.0%

Dosage form
Self test kit consisting of 3 test strips, 1 comparison card, instructions for use.

Application
  1. Collect the first morning urine with a dry and clean container;
  2. Remove the test strip from the foil pouch;
  3. Immerse the test strip in the sample for 1-2 seconds;
  4. Wait 2 minutes to read the result.
Interpretation of the results:

  • Negative: The presence of leucocytes, blood, nitrites and proteins in the urine was not detected.
  • Positive leucocytes: Leucocytes were detected in the urine. It is recommended that you consult your doctor.
  • Positive blood: Blood was detected in the urine. It is recommended that you consult your doctor.
  • Positive nitrites: Nitrites were detected in the urine. It is recommended that you consult your doctor.
  • Positive protein: Protein has been detected in the urine. It is recommended that you consult your doctor.
