Otovent® is a nasal balloon (medical device) designed to ventilate the Eustachian tube in order to relieve negative pressure in the middle ear.
Otovent® consists of two parts: a latex balloon and a polypropylene nasal piece, which are assembled before use. It is a non-sterile, reusable medical device.
- Indications: Otovent® is intended for the treatment of negative pressure in the middle ear.
Who can use Otovent®?
Otovent® can be used by adults and children aged 3 years and over. Treatment of children must always be carried out under adult supervision.
How does Otovent® work?
Otovent® helps to equalise the pressure in the middle ear by inflating a balloon through the nose using the auto-inflation technique. Auto-inflation with a nasal balloon increases nasal pressure, thereby allowing the Eustachian tube to open.

Directions for use
- For fluid in the middle ear (blocked ear): During the first week of treatment, Otovent® should be used at least three times a day (morning, midday, evening), with one inflation into each nostril each time. After one week, Otovent® should be used at least twice daily (morning and evening). Treatment may last longer than one month, and several months of treatment may be required to achieve the maximum clinical effect. Consult your doctor after 2–3 weeks to decide whether treatment should be continued.
- To relieve symptoms following flying, diving or hyperbaric chamber treatment: When used in connection with flying, Otovent® should be administered 3–4 times as soon as the descent begins. If symptoms persist, treatment may be continued after landing. Otovent® can be used before or after diving and during or after hyperbaric chamber treatment to relieve symptoms.
Step-by-step instructions:
- The nasal piece must be clean.
- Connect the nasal balloon to the flat end of the nasal piece.
- Hold the spherical part of the nasal piece firmly against your left nostril with your left hand. Pinch your right nostril closed with your right index finger.
- Take a deep breath in through your mouth, then close your mouth and inflate the nose balloon by blowing through your left nostril until the nose balloon is the size of a grapefruit (10–12 cm).
- With the inflated nose balloon still pressed firmly against your nostril, swallow a few times.
- Repeat the process through your right nostril. It may take a little practice to learn how to use Otovent®. Gently pre-stretching the nasal balloon before first use may make inflation easier.
Care: Clean the nasal piece after use with a mild detergent and rinse it with clean water. Dispose of the nasal balloon after it has been used 20 times.
