How can nipple protection help with cracked or sore nipples?

Breastfeeding is a very special time, but it isn’t always easy. You may suffer from sore or even cracked nipples, particularly in the first few days after the birth, whilst you and your baby are still learning how to breastfeed. After all, your sensitive nipples haven’t yet got used to the pressure and regular suckling of your baby. These symptoms should ease over time. If they don’t, seek advice from a breastfeeding counsellor or a midwife. In the meantime, wearing a nipple shield (also known as a breast shield) between feeds can prevent your clothes from rubbing against your sensitive nipples, thereby helping them to heal.

Treating different types of nipple problems

Although sensitive or sore nipples are not uncommon among new mums, some discomfort may also be linked to your breastfeeding position or to your baby not latching on properly. It is therefore always a good idea to seek advice from a breastfeeding counsellor or midwife. If your nipples are bleeding, you are experiencing severe pain whilst breastfeeding, or you notice symptoms of a breast infection such as mastitis, it is important to see a healthcare professional.

How do nipple shields work?

You wear the nipple shield inside your bra to prevent fabric from rubbing against sensitive or sore nipples. This allows your skin to regenerate and promotes healing. If you’re using a nipple shield, it’s a good idea to wear a nursing bra, as these are usually a bit ‘roomier’ than a normal bra and the nipple shield fits in better. However, you don’t need to worry that the Medela nipple shield might show through your clothes: Their discreet design ensures a natural look. You can wear the nipple shields continuously between feeds. However, do not wear them in bed at night, as this can make sore nipples even worse.

How to use

The Medela nipple shield consists of two parts: a soft, flexible silicone membrane that feels comfortable against sensitive skin, and an outer shell with ventilation holes that allow your skin to breathe. They are easy to assemble:

  1. Place the membrane onto the outer shell and snap it into place all the way round.
  2. Place the assembled nipple shield in your bra so that the opening of the membrane is positioned directly over your nipple. The holes should face upwards.

Some leaked breast milk may collect in the nipple shield whilst you are wearing it. Do not feed this milk to your baby; instead, pour it away when you remove the nipple shield.
