What are hydrocolloids?

Hydrocolloids consist of a gelling agent (sodium carboxymethylcellulose) embedded in an adhesive matrix:

• they form a gel on contact with fluids, e.g. wound exudate
• this gel encloses the wound and forms a healing capsule
• the healing capsule creates a moist wound healing environment
