Glycine is the smallest and simplest naturally occurring amino acid. The name "glycine" is derived from the Greek word glykýs, which means "sweet" in German. This is no coincidence, as glycine is naturally sweet and can therefore be used as a natural sugar substitute to sweeten food and drinks - without triggering the release of insulin. Glycine has numerous functions in the body. For example, glycine acts as a calming neurotransmitter, which reduces the transmission of nerve impulses and minimises the development of restlessness and anxiety in the body. Glycine, taken before bedtime, can therefore also improve the quality of sleep. Together with glutamic acid and cysteine, glycine is an essential component of glutathione, which plays a role in the neutralisation of radical substances.
Glycine forms the indispensable basis for the formation of collagen, an important structural protein for tendons, ligaments, bones and cartilage. In the skin, collagen is an important building block for connective tissue - after all, 70% of it is made up of this protein. As glycine is 100% vegan in origin, this amino acid is suitable as an alternative to conventional collagen products.
