Bitter melon capsules from Gall Pharma contain 1000 mg standardised bitter melon extract (Momordica charantia) per daily dose to supply bioactive plant substances. Supports blood sugar levels and stimulates fat digestion.
The bitter melon or bitter cucumber (Momordica charantia) is a tropical, annual climbing plant from the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae). The plant is known by various names: Charantia, Korela, Sopropo, Balsam Apple, Ampalaya. It is particularly popular as a vegetable in Asia and its health benefits have been known for centuries. It is grown in Asia, South America, Africa and the Caribbean.
A high protein, carbohydrate and mineral content (iron, calcium, phosphorus, copper, potassium), a low fat content and carotene, vitamins A, B1, B2 and C have been found in the plant. Triterpene glycosides (momordicins and momordicosides) are isolated from leaves, seeds and fruits.
The following substances extracted from seeds and fruits are of particular interest:
- Charantin (a glucoside mixture) with a suspected hypoglycaemic (blood sugar lowering) effect
- P-insulin, which is very similar to insulin from pigs and also has a blood sugar-lowering effect
- the antiviral protein MAP 30 and RiPs (ribosome inactivating protein), whereby MAP 30 inhibits HIV-1 infection and virus replication in in-vitro experiments (i.e. outside the living organism)
- α- and β-momorcharin, two immunomodulatory glycoproteins with antitumour effects
Various research groups investigated the positive influence of bitter melon extract on blood sugar in people with diabetes in old age.

- Notes: Bitter melon GPH capsules should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as two proteins isolated from the unripe fruit (momorcharin α and β) have shown abortive effects in animal experiments. Caution is advised for people with liver disease. Bitter melon GPH capsules should be avoided in case of known allergy or hypersensitivity to pumpkin and melon plants.
