Zinc is an essential trace element. Zinc activates numerous endogenous enzymes and promotes growth and wound healing. Between 10% and 50% of zinc is absorbed from food. The WHO recommends a daily intake of 12 mg (women) and 15 mg (men).
This trace element fulfils the following functions:
- Zinc is important for cell division, for example skin cells, reproductive organs and the cells of the immune system. An adequate supply of zinc is good and supports beautiful skin, hair and nails as well as their growth. Zinc is particularly important for athletes, older people and diabetics.
- The causes of a zinc deficiency are either a reduced zinc intake or limited utilisation, in addition to an increased zinc requirement or increased zinc loss. Zinc is an essential nutrient that cannot be produced by the body itself and must therefore be supplied through food. Zinc intake must be regular. The type of diet can also be decisive for an undersupply of zinc. Avoiding meat and frequent consumption of convenience foods favours the development of a zinc deficiency. Reduction diets, frequent consumption of alcohol and inflammation of the gastric mucosa lead to a zinc deficiency.
