Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, also known as ascorbic acid. Humans cannot produce vitamin C themselves; the body must regularly absorb it from food. Vitamin C is naturally found mainly in fruit and vegetables. Vitamin C is added to many processed foods as an additive to preserve them and retain their original colour. It is involved in many metabolic reactions, including the formation of connective tissue, bones, cartilage and gums. It is considered an antioxidant and protects cells from oxidative stress. It can also improve the absorption of iron in the body. In buffered vitamin C, the acid is bound to an alkaline mineral. This makes vitamin C more stomach-friendly and also very well tolerated by people with sensitive stomachs.
