Niacin 15 mg GPH capsules contain 15 mg nicotinamide in a hard gelatine capsule. The vitamin has a variety of functions in the human body. It is a component of NAD and NADP, which are involved as coenzymes in respiration and hydrogen transfer. These processes are crucial for the functions of the heart, nerves and energy metabolism. It can also bring about a reduction in blood lipid levels. The vitamin is also involved in the synthesis and breakdown of carbohydrates, fatty acids and amino acids and is also important for the cell's energy balance.
Niacin, vitamin B3 or nicotinic acid, only occurs freely in nature in small quantities, mainly as an amide (nicotinamide). Natural sources of niacin are meat (beef, pork), yeast, rice bran and liver. It is widely distributed in many plant and animal food sources, except in pure fat. It forms an important building block of various co-enzymes (NAD, NADP) and in this form is of central importance for the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Niacin is not actually a vitamin, as it can be produced by mammals and the human body from the amino acid L-tryptophan. Nevertheless, an unbalanced diet (maize) can lead to deficiency symptoms. The German Nutrition Society recommends 15 mg per day.
