Alpha lipoic acid, also known as thioctic acid, is a vitamin-like endogenous substance. It has high concentrations in the heart and liver. As a coenzyme, it is involved in numerous metabolic processes. It has a broad spectrum of activity as an antioxidant. The redox system lipoic acid/dihydrolipoic acid is able to unfold its protective potential in hydrophilic and lipophilic compartments.
Lipoic Acid Plus GPH Capsules contain 100 mg alpha lipoic acid, 250 mg O-acetyl carnitine HCl and vitamins C (100 mg), E (5 mg), B1 (1.4 mg), B6 (2 mg), B12 (1 μg) in a cellulose capsule. Possible causes of an increased need for lipoic acid are carbohydrate metabolism disorders, such as diabetes mellitus. Antioxidant micronutrients such as alpha lipoic acid alleviate micro- and macroangiopathies as a consequence of diabetes. It also leads to an increase in glucose uptake and oxidation as well as increased glycogen synthesis. Studies have shown that alpha lipoic acid significantly improves neuropathic symptoms (pain, paraesthesia, burning sensation). The administration of acetyl-L-carnitine is also effective in diabetic polyneuropathy by alleviating symptoms and improving nerve fibre regeneration. Acetyl-L-carnitine is food for the brain and nerves. As natural metabolites of the cells, both physiologically occurring substances are able to protect them from oxidative decay. Vitamins C and E have a high antioxidant, cell-protecting potential. The neurotropic B vitamins B1, B6 and B12 intervene in the pathomechanism of diabetic neuropathy.
