L-threonine is an essential amino acid. These are amino acids that the body cannot produce itself. They should therefore be supplied to the body in sufficient quantities through food or supplements. A permanent deficiency or lack of essential amino acids can impair the metabolism. Because L-threonine is also used as an additional source of energy during heavy physical exertion, an increased need for this amino acid can arise in such situations.

A lack of L-threonine leads to a lack of appetite, bone growth disorders and a fatty liver, among other things.

L-threonine can be converted to glycine in the body. This non-essential amino acid can contribute to a variety of positive effects in the body. Glycine can support the excretion of uric acid. This amino acid is also important for an optimally functioning immune system. Glycine also has calming and anxiolytic properties. Glycine can also improve concentration and sleep quality.
