L-proline is a non-essential amino acid. Non-essential amino acids are compounds that the human body can produce in sufficient quantities itself using sugar and other substances found in food. L-proline is an essential component of collagen, which is particularly important for the joints, tendons and the heart. If you wish to specifically support your metabolism, you can take free amino acids, as these are generally absorbed relatively easily by the body. Proline is a unique amino acid in terms of its structure. It does not possess a free α-amino group and is therefore classified as an amino acid.
This amino acid performs the following functions:
- Importance for collagen metabolism: This amino acid is particularly important for collagen metabolism. Collagen is a widespread structural component of the human body and accounts for up to 30 per cent of total body protein. With a composition of 30 per cent glycine, 12–14 per cent hydroxyproline and 12 per cent proline, it has a characteristic and exceptionally consistent amino acid composition.
