Ornithine is a non-essential amino acid that is formed from the amino acid arginine and can be converted to the amino acid citrulline. Ornithine is produced during the urea cycle. As the urea cycle serves to detoxify ammonia, ornithine is often a central component of detoxification therapy. Ammonia is produced during protein breakdown and must be removed from the blood quickly because it is a neurotoxin. In the case of liver damage, ornithine also protects the brain via ammonia elimination. Ornithine is also converted into messenger substances that reduce stress and improve sleep. It also provides building blocks for muscles and connective tissue and could help with weight loss and age-related complaints. L-ornithine 400 mg GPH capsules contain L-ornithine HCl of non-animal origin, which has been produced by fermentation.
