L-arginine is a semi-essential amino acid and is mainly found in foods with a high protein content. Semi-essential amino acids are amino acids for which the body's own production is not always sufficient. These are mainly stressful situations, such as during training or under stress. In such cases, they should be supplied to the organism specifically with food or by means of food supplements.
L-arginine is mainly found in egg whites, is abundant in peanut protein (11%) and is widely found in free form in plant foods. It is the main component of collagen, elastin, haemoglobin, insulin and glucagon.
L-arginine is important for muscle metabolism and in this context has a key function in the storage, transport and excretion of nitrogen. Creatine, one of the energy-rich compounds of the muscles, is produced from L-arginine. L-arginine also plays an important role in liver metabolism. As a supplier of NO, this amino acid, together with L-lysine, is crucial for lymphocyte proliferation. L-arginine therefore has a strengthening effect on the immune system.
Research into L-arginine for erectile dysfunction has shown that, preferably at 5,000 mg (but at least 3,000 mg per day), it can provide decent results for increasing potency. Side effects are not to be expected.
