Chitosan is an indigestible fibre made from the polysaccharide chitin. Chitin occurs naturally in the shells of crustaceans (crabs, shrimps) and insects. Due to its cellulose-like chemical structure, chitosan is able to bind many times its own weight in fat. This compound is not reversible, so that once bound fats can no longer be absorbed by the body. As chitosan is neither digested nor absorbed in the small intestine, it is excreted together with the bound fats in the faeces. This reduces the energy intake and lowers the cholesterol level. Chitosan GPH capsules contain 280 mg of chitosan powder, which is obtained from the fresh shells of polar prawns.
